The difference between food extruders and feed extruders lies here

The basic difference between feed extruders and food extruders lies in the length-to-diameter ratio of the screw and the configuration of internal shearing and kneading components.

Extruded foods for human consumption focus more on crispy texture and varied flavors; no one eats extruded foods for nutritional supplementation. Extruded foods are mainly made from grains with high starch content, which are readily available and easy to cook, resulting in a short "length-to-diameter ratio" of the extruder and weak internal shearing and kneading configurations.

Feed extruder

The animals raised on extruded feed primarily consume it for growth, so pets and ornamental fish also need to maintain the protein and energy required for growth. The feed must contain a high amount of protein and fat, with a relatively low proportion of starch. These ingredients are difficult to cook thoroughly, requiring more energy to process them, so the extruder has a large length-to-diameter ratio and stronger internal shear configuration.

Therefore, using a feed extruder to produce starch-based puffed food is somewhat wasteful. Conversely, using this type of food puffing machinery to produce feed is either difficult to process or results in low yield.

Of course, the structure of tissue protein and other food extruders is also very robust, and using them for ordinary extruded feed is somewhat wasteful.
